The island of St Martin-St Maarten is the only island in the Caribbean that shares two European nations. This dual identity appeals to a variety of travelers from Europe and North America.
The French side, known as St. Martin, occupies the northern two-thirds of the island and is known for its fashionable shopping and low-key sensibility. The Dutch side, known as St. Maarten, occupies the southern third and is known for its resort-style hotels, casinos and nightlife.
With gorgeous aquamarine water and white sand, both St Martin and St Maarten have fantastic beaches. Though, Maho Beach is by far the most internationally recognized for its proximity to St Maarten’s airport and spectacular plane spotting. Other notable beaches include Orient Beach and Mullet Bay Beach.
Visitors to St Martin-St Maarten also enjoy a variety of activities and shopping throughout the island. Marigot, the capital of the French side, has a charming shopping district with boutique-style shops and local art galleries. While Philipsburg, the capital of the Dutch side, serves as the island’s cruise ship port. Along Front Street, the bustling port city’s main shopping district, duty-free shops line both sides of the street.

St. Martin-St. Maarten enjoys a tropical Caribbean climate year round. The average annual temperature is 80°F. The dry season, which is also considered the high tourist season, is December through April. While there is no rainy season, hurricane season in the Caribbean is June through December.
